Police dismantle £500k cannabis farm near Wolston

Police have dismantled a £500,000 cannabis operation hidden beneath a shipping container in the Warwickshire countryside, arresting five people on suspicion of producing the drug. The sophisticated setup, discovered near the village of Wolston on the outskirts of Coventry, drew comparisons to the underground grow depicted in Guy Ritchie's film The Gentlemen.

Raid uncovers concealed underground facility

Officers from Rugby Police executed a warrant on Wednesday, August 19, after receiving intelligence about the site. The entrance to the cultivation facility was concealed beneath a shipping container that sat in the middle of a field, appearing innocuous to passers-by. Inside the container, officers found makeshift accommodation, including a cooking area and bunk beds, suggesting the operation was staffed around the clock.

An opening in the corner of the container housed a ladder that descended into the underground grow, where cannabis plants were being cultivated on a large scale. The estimated street value of the crop was put at £500,000.

Five arrests made as suspects attempt to flee

Rugby Police confirmed the arrests on Thursday, August 20, in a statement that detailed the raid. The force said: "Yesterday, our officers discovered a cannabis grow worth an estimated £500,000 near Wolston. The warrant turned up an underground grow not dissimilar to something from Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen, with an entry hatch in an inconspicuous shipping container on the surface."

All five suspects were on-site when officers arrived, and three attempted to flee the scene. However, they were quickly detained by detectives. The police added: "We've arrested five people on suspicion of producing cannabis – all five were unlucky enough to be on-site when we turned up. Three attempted to make a break for it, but not fast enough to escape our detectives."

Operation highlights rural crime challenge

The discovery underscores the lengths to which criminal gangs will go to conceal large-scale cannabis production in rural areas. The use of a shipping container as a disguise, combined with underground cultivation, mirrors tactics seen in organised crime operations across the UK. The site has been dismantled, and the investigation is ongoing as police work to identify the wider network behind the grow.

The five individuals arrested remain in custody, and enquiries are continuing. Rugby Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.
