Major Police Operation Nets £14,000 in Tobacco and Thousands of Illegal Cigarettes
In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, West Midlands Police have conducted a series of raids resulting in the seizure of hand-rolling tobacco valued at £14,000 and approximately 12,000 illegal cigarettes. The operation, which targeted rogue traders in Walsall, marks a concerted effort to combat the sale of unlawful goods in the community.
Coordinated Enforcement Activity Across Multiple Locations
The police action followed earlier enforcement activities in March, where officers searched seven shops and vehicles. During these initial raids, authorities discovered 6,980 illegal cigarettes, 1.8 kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco, and 37 single-use vapes. Additional items removed from circulation included an offensive weapon and 30 canisters of nitrous oxide, highlighting the diverse nature of the illicit goods being traded.
Officers reported that the concealed stock was hidden in various locations to evade detection, such as inside bins, under counters, and within storerooms. This demonstrates the lengths to which rogue traders go to operate outside the law, posing risks to public safety and undermining legitimate businesses.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with Walsall Council Trading Standards, emphasizing the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling illegal trade.
