Major Police Operation Nets Weapons and Makes Dozens of Arrests
West Midlands Police's specialized Project Guardian taskforce has reported significant results from its January operations targeting youth violence and knife crime across the region. The team seized approximately 20 weapons, including 11 knives, and made more than 50 arrests during the month-long crackdown.
Widespread Patrols and Stop-Searches Yield Results
The Guardian team conducted extensive patrols throughout the West Midlands, covering Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, and Wolverhampton. Officers carried out 341 stop and searches that led to the discovery of dangerous weapons and recovery of drugs.
Of the 51 arrests made in January, 20 occurred in Birmingham, with 14 additional arrests across Coventry and Solihull for multiple offenses. On the western side of the force area, the Guardian team made 17 arrests.
Police Emphasize Life-Saving Impact of Operations
Inspector Colin Gallier from the Guardian Taskforce stated: "Our teams are continuing to work incredibly hard to take knives and offensive weapons off the streets. Every knife seized is potentially a life saved. And these knives are the reason why we need to continue to carry out stop and searches."
He added that the team works alongside other policing units to take action and warn against the risks of carrying weapons, with efforts remaining ongoing to reduce violent incidents.
Multi-Faceted Approach to Youth Violence
The Guardian team collaborates with partners through the Violence Reduction Partnership to divert young people away from criminal activity. Police emphasized their comprehensive approach includes:
- Plain-clothed operations to identify offenders
- High visibility patrols in affected areas
- Positive engagement with young people in communities
- Daily school visits by officers to deter violent behavior
A West Midlands Police spokesperson explained: "Project Guardian is a specialist taskforce which tackles knife crime and youth violence. There is particular emphasis on reducing knife crime through a range of tactics."
Community Involvement Encouraged
Police urged residents to report suspicious activity in their areas by calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. The operations come amid ongoing concerns about knife crime, highlighted by a recent fatal stabbing in Smethwick on February 20.
The Guardian Taskforce reported maintaining momentum in tackling drugs, weapons, and serious youth violence, with results indicating increasing monthly arrest numbers as their operations continue across the West Midlands region.
