Police have been deployed in significant numbers across Birmingham city centre this evening following reports of disorder involving young people at the start of the festive break.
Dispersal Order Enacted After Firework Incident
West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating an incident where a firework was let off on the afternoon of Friday, 19 December 2025. The force was swift to label subsequent rumours of gunshots being fired as completely "false."
Officers stated their primary focus is ensuring the safety of the many visitors and residents enjoying the city's renowned Christmas markets and early holiday celebrations. In response to the anti-social behaviour, a dispersal order has been authorised, granting police the power to direct individuals believed to be causing trouble to leave the area.
Comprehensive Policing Plan for Busy Weekend
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We have extra officers in Birmingham city centre this evening due to reports of a number of young people involved in anti-social behaviour. As ever, our focus is on keeping the city centre safe and welcoming for everyone."
The statement continued, emphasising a zero-tolerance approach: "This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated in Birmingham or anywhere in the West Midlands. A comprehensive policing plan is in place for this evening and the weekend, and you can expect to see more officers on patrol in key busy areas."
