West Mercia Police have issued a warning about a surge in online security threats, urging residents to strengthen their passwords to protect against identity theft. The force's economic crime unit highlighted the importance of password management in its weekly fraud update, coinciding with World Password Day on May 7.
Password Management Tips
Police recommend using passwords of at least 12 characters, mixing letters, numbers, and symbols, and avoiding obvious choices like birthdays or pet names. Unique passwords for each account are essential, as reusing passwords allows criminals to access multiple accounts once one is compromised.
Two-Factor Authentication
Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring a PIN sent via email or text. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access.
Never Share Passwords
Police emphasize never sharing passwords, even with trusted individuals. For those struggling to remember multiple passwords, a reputable password manager can securely store and generate strong passwords.
Residents are encouraged to check their password strength and update them regularly. Victims of fraud can contact the police for assistance.
