The Goose, a pub in Wolverhampton city centre, has publicly thanked two security staff members, Marva and Ausama, for protecting customers during disorder involving football fans on Saturday, August 29.
Trouble flared between Wolves and Stoke City supporters following the EFL Championship match between the two teams. Video footage circulating online shows fans throwing a traffic cone at each other and trading blows on Lichfield Street, directly outside the pub.
West Midlands Police has launched an investigation into the incident, with officers currently reviewing footage. A police spokesperson told BirminghamLive: "We are aware of reports of disorder in Wolverhampton city centre. No injuries have been reported to us, and we are reviewing video footage as part of our enquiries."
Pub's tribute to security staff
In a Facebook post, The Goose said it wanted to "shed a positive light on the day" and issued a heartfelt message to Ausama and Marva. The pub wrote: "After seeing the videos circulating around regarding the football disorder, we want to shed a positive light on the day. Massive thank you to these two who had the doors locked and everybody inside safe within seconds of it starting on the street."
The post continued: "Wolverhampton isn’t a bad place to go, in fact we have some incredible bars and venues up here and guys like Ausama and Marva do an amazing job in keeping you all safe."
Police appeal for information
West Midlands Police has asked anyone with information about the disorder to contact officers via 101, quoting crime reference number 20/380807/26. The investigation remains ongoing as police review footage of the incident.
