England Pub Goers Face £5,000 Fines for Throwing Glasses During World Cup
Pub Habit Could Lead to £5,000 Fine in England

Legal experts have issued a stark warning to football fans in England: a common pub celebration habit could lead to fines of up to £5,000. Throwing pint glasses into the air during World Cup matches may result in serious legal consequences, especially if someone is injured.

Reckless Celebrations Can Lead to Assault Charges

According to legal definitions, an assault is "any act by which a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to suffer or apprehend immediate unlawful violence." This means that the celebratory act of tossing a glass could be classified as assault, carrying a fine of up to £5,000 or even a prison sentence, depending on the severity of the incident.

Fans are gearing up to watch England's first match on Wednesday, with a 9pm kick-off. The government has extended pub opening hours for the tournament to support the hospitality sector.

Hospitality Sector Faces Challenges

Figures indicate that 2,077 hospitality venues are at risk of closure due to rising costs. Trade body UKHospitality reports that 963 restaurants, 574 hotels, and 540 pubs face potential wipeout from effective business rate hikes. The average hotel could see a £28,900 increase in business rates next year alone, with a total rise of £205,200 by 2029.

To combat this, the government has announced a £61 million lifeline to help communities buy local pubs before they close. Communities Secretary Steve Reed will unveil the scheme on Tuesday, June 16, as part of efforts to support the hospitality sector.

Government Support for Pubs

Reed stated: "The Government has already moved to keep pubs open later this summer and declared war on the fun police. This new announcement is about giving local people the power to stop their boozer and other beloved spaces closing permanently. So get down there, support your local during the World Cup – it’s your patriotic duty."

The fund aims to empower communities to raise the necessary capital to take over pubs and other valued local venues, ensuring they remain open for future generations.
