The RAC has issued a stark warning to drivers across the United Kingdom as an intense heatwave sweeps the nation, creating what it describes as an 'extremely dangerous situation' on the roads. The breakdown assistance provider reports that its patrols have already dealt with 10 per cent more breakdowns than usual for a Tuesday at this point in summer, with demand expected to 'increase significantly' as temperatures continue to climb.
Record-Breaking Temperatures Expected
The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat, covering a vast area from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham. This warning will be in force from 9am on Wednesday, June 24, to 9pm on Thursday, June 25. A 'heat dome' settling over western Europe could bring temperatures of up to 40°C by Wednesday, potentially surpassing the record for June set in Hampshire in 1976.
RAC Advice for Drivers
RAC breakdown spokesperson Simon Williams emphasized the importance of carrying an emergency kit: 'Carrying an emergency kit in case of getting stuck at the side of the road is essential. This should include plenty of water, sunscreen, a large umbrella to protect from the sun and portable battery pack to keep mobile phones charged.'
Williams also warned about tyre pressure issues: 'It's also common in such high temperatures for tyre pressures to increase significantly, triggering dashboard warning lights. We urge drivers not to deflate tyres as this is likely to lead to having too little pressure the next morning when it's cooler.'
Impact on Road Safety
The RAC's advice comes as the heatwave creates hazardous conditions for motorists. Dehydration, overheating, and vehicle breakdowns pose serious risks, especially on motorways and busy roads. Drivers are urged to plan journeys carefully, carry sufficient water, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before setting out.
