A man who shouted racial abuse at police and paramedics while demanding a full English breakfast has been jailed after causing a major motorway closure near Solihull. Geoffrey Brewer, 53, from Brierley Hill, climbed over railings on the M42 bridge near junction five and brought traffic to a standstill for more than five hours.
Incident Details
The incident began at around 6am last July and lasted until 11.40am. Brewer was seen making Nazi salutes and shouting 'make Britain great again' from the bridge. When emergency services arrived, he hurled vile racist abuse at them and threw a drinks bottle. Prosecutor Harman Kooner told the court that Brewer was not expressing suicidal intentions but threatened to jump if he did not receive a full English breakfast, along with other food, drinks, and cigarettes.
Mental Health and Drug Issues
The court heard that Brewer had undisclosed mental health problems and drug issues. He was homeless at the time of the offence. His defence barrister stated that the offending was, in Brewer's own words, 'a cry for help'.
Legal Outcome
Brewer admitted two counts of racially aggravated intentional harassment and causing danger to road users. He was sentenced to nine months in prison but was told he would be released immediately due to time already served on remand. The motorway closure impacted thousands of motorists, causing significant disruption.
This case highlights the serious consequences of such behaviour, both for the offender and the public. The court emphasised the severity of racially aggravated harassment and the danger posed to road users during the standoff.
