Return to 'Britain's Roughest Estate': Two Years On, Residents Cry for Help
Return to 'Britain's Roughest Estate': Two Years On

Residents of a Black Country neighbourhood once dubbed 'Britain's roughest estate' have again called for help, saying conditions have deteriorated further two years after the label was applied.

In 2023, the Bakenall ward in Walsall gained notoriety when a YouTube video went viral, amassing over 336,000 views within days. The footage highlighted residents' constant struggle with crime, prompting the Express & Star to investigate in November 2023.

At that time, locals reported persistent anti-social behaviour, crime, and roaming gangs of youths and adults. Many said they 'did not feel safe' in the area.

Now, more than two years later, a return visit reveals that little has improved—and some say things are worse.

Residents Speak Out

One resident, who used the pseudonym Steven for fear of reprisal, told our reporter: 'It's just gotten worse. I remember reading the original story years ago. We actually thought that things might improve a bit, but it just got worse, really. There's no pride.'

Another local, who wished to remain anonymous, added: 'The crime is still here. Nothing has changed. We need more police and more support from the council.'

Community Plea

The community is once again pleading for authorities to step in. Residents hope that renewed attention will lead to tangible action to tackle the issues blighting their neighbourhood.
