Campaigners are calling for new road safety measures after a Birmingham schoolboy tragically died following a crash in the city. Kyron, aged nine, was left fighting for his life after a serious collision on Masshouse Lane in Kings Norton on Tuesday, July 28. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition before sadly losing his brave fight for life.
Campaigners demand further interventions
Campaigners for Better Streets for Birmingham have now called for "further interventions" to prevent road deaths. They have urged the new administration at Birmingham City Council to set out how it plans to do this. The call comes after a road safety emergency was declared by the authority in July 2024 following a high number of serious and fatal crashes on the city's road network.
A spokesperson for the road safety group said: "We're devastated to learn about the death of nine-year-old Kyron following last month’s crash in Kings Norton. We send our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Kyron’s death fell shortly after the second anniversary of the council declaring a road safety emergency. We desperately need further interventions delivered faster. No family or community should have to worry about their loved ones making it home safely. We call on the new administration to set out how they intend to urgently address this emergency. This city deserves nothing less."
Dangerous driving demonstration planned
The group also urged people "concerned about dangerous driving" in the city to join campaigners in Victoria Square at 5pm on Friday, September 4. "We will honour those whose lives have been lost or seriously affected by road violence and renew our calls for action to make Birmingham's roads safer for everyone," campaigners added.
Floral tributes have been left in Kings Norton for Kyron following the tragedy. One message read: "Fly high Kyron. Keep singing, dancing and smiling! You will be missed. Goodnight, god bless kiddo."
Police statement and court proceedings
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "A nine-year-old boy has sadly died following a collision on Masshouse Lane, Kings Norton on Tuesday, 28 July. His family have asked for privacy at this tragic time, and we would ask that you respect their wishes at this time."
James Connors, 32, is accused of two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified and without insurance in relation to the Kings Norton collision. He is due to appear at Birmingham Crown Court on August 27 for a pre-trial hearing.
