Armed Robber Trapped in Coventry Shop After Christmas Eve Raid, Jailed for Over Four Years

This is the dramatic moment a hapless armed robber found himself trapped inside a Midland convenience store after a terrifying Christmas Eve raid. The quick-thinking actions of a shop worker led to the robber's capture and subsequent imprisonment.

The Christmas Eve Robbery at Riley Square

On December 24 last year, Jordan Peebles, armed with a large kitchen knife, entered a store at the Riley Square shopping centre in Bell Green, Coventry. The 32-year-old from Coventry brandished the weapon and attacked a member of staff during the robbery.

As Peebles began filling his bag with goods from behind the counter, the shop worker managed to flee the scene. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, the employee then lowered the shop's security shutters, effectively locking Peebles inside with his stolen loot.

The Trapped Robber's Desperate Pleas

When Peebles attempted to escape with his bag of stolen items, he discovered he was trapped. Security footage shows the robber desperately trying to lift the shutters and force them open, but to no avail.

Police arrived at the scene within minutes, where they found Peebles still trapped inside. Officers can be heard telling him to drop his knife and "put it on the floor now" as the robber pleads, "get me out of here."

Peebles was eventually let out, pointed at an officer, and then placed in handcuffs before being arrested for robbery.

Court Sentencing and Police Response

Last week at Warwick Crown Court, Peebles pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to four years and four months in prison.

Detective Sergeant Jay Aston from Coventry local CID commented on the case, stating: "This was a shocking knifepoint robbery, which could have resulted in death or serious injury to the man Peebles assaulted."

"The man showed incredible bravery and quick thinking to defend himself, leave the shop and lower the shutters, trapping Peebles inside," DS Aston continued. "I hope Peebles will have time to reflect on his actions and choices while in prison."

The detective also praised the response officers who were at the scene within minutes to make the arrest.

Police Advice to the Public

A West Midlands Police spokesperson added: "We encourage anyone who witnesses shoplifting to report it to us, as this enables us to build an accurate picture of who is committing these offences, where and when."

"Call 101 or go online to report crime to us and always call 999 in an emergency," the spokesperson concluded.

The case serves as a reminder of both the dangers of knife crime and the importance of quick thinking in emergency situations. The shop worker's actions not only protected themselves but also led directly to the apprehension and conviction of an armed robber.
