Schools across the West Midlands have been forced to close as the region braces for a severe storm that has prompted a rare danger to life weather warning. The Met Office issued an amber alert for heavy rain and strong winds, with forecasts predicting up to 100mm of rainfall in some areas and gusts reaching 70mph.
Widespread Closures and Disruption
Local authorities have confirmed that dozens of schools will remain shut on Tuesday, with many parents advised to keep children at home. Birmingham City Council said it was monitoring the situation closely, while Sandwell and Wolverhampton councils also reported multiple closures. The extreme weather has also disrupted public transport, with several bus and train services suspended or delayed.
According to the Met Office, the storm poses a risk to life due to flying debris, large waves, and potential flooding. Residents have been urged to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. The Environment Agency has issued multiple flood warnings across the region, particularly near rivers and low-lying areas.
Impact on Communities
Local authorities have set up emergency response teams to deal with any incidents. Sandwell Council advised residents to prepare for possible power cuts and to secure loose items in gardens. In Birmingham, parks and outdoor attractions have been closed as a precaution. The storm is expected to ease by Wednesday morning, but further disruption is anticipated.
One parent, Sarah Johnson from Sutton Coldfield, told BirminghamWorld: "We received a text from school at 6am saying it was closed. It's worrying, but safety comes first. We're staying home and hoping the worst passes quickly." The council has urged parents to check school websites and social media for updates.
Emergency Services on Standby
West Midlands Fire Service has placed additional crews on standby to respond to weather-related emergencies. The service warned that fallen trees and power lines could cause significant damage. Meanwhile, the NHS has reminded residents to use 999 only for life-threatening emergencies and to consider alternative services for minor ailments.
With the storm set to continue through the day, schools and businesses are advised to remain vigilant. The Met Office has said the amber warning will remain in place until 6pm Tuesday, with a yellow warning for wind extended into Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to stay updated via local news and official channels.
