Seven people, including two serving Cleveland Police officers, died in a head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of Saturday 22 August 2026. A Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the carriageway struck a marked police vehicle that was moving in the correct direction, the force confirmed.
The collision occurred at 3.39am on Saturday in South Bank, near the Teesworks development. Five occupants of the Passat and the two officers in the police car were pronounced dead at the scene. The officers have been named as Pc Matthew Blades and Pc Tom Clough.
Pursuit preceded the fatal collision
Cleveland Police officers had spotted a suspicious vehicle and began a pursuit, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The pursued car then turned onto the A66 and collided with the police vehicle head-on. The IOPC has launched an investigation following a mandatory referral from the force.
Officers are still working to formally identify all the occupants of the Volkswagen Passat. Families of those already identified have been informed and are receiving specialist support, Cleveland Police said.
Road closures and ongoing investigation
The A66 remains closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane in Eston. Cleveland Police officers are stationed at both ends of the cordon, and the crash site is not visible from the road closures. A large white tent has been erected over the scene, surrounded by multiple emergency service vehicles, and a drone exclusion zone has been established around the area.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller said the force would co-operate fully with the investigation. "While this investigation takes place, we strongly urge people to avoid speculation," she said.
National and local reaction
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was "devastated" to hear that seven people were killed in the collision. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the crash as "devastating" and said her thoughts were with all those affected.
Anna Turley, MP for the Redcar constituency where the crash happened, confirmed the A66 would remain shut in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane and urged the public to stay away and take alternative routes. "Cleveland Police have confirmed that seven people have sadly lost their lives," she said. "Their families and loved ones are now facing an unimaginable loss that will be felt forever."
Turley added: "Two of the seven people who have lost their lives were Cleveland Police officers, on duty serving our community. They went to work to keep people safe and they should have come home to their families. Their loss will be felt deeply by their loved ones, fellow officers and right across the communities they served."
David Taylor and Stephen Martin, councillors for the Eston ward, said they were "deeply saddened" by the "unimaginable tragedy". A post on their Facebook page read: "We are deeply saddened by the devastating news that seven people have lost their lives following a collision on the A66 at South Bank in the early hours of this morning." The post continued: "This is an unimaginable tragedy that will be felt deeply throughout TS6 and communities across Cleveland and around the country. Absolutely heartbreaking."
Cleveland Police Federation chairwoman Lauren Somerville said: "Words cannot describe the pain the Cleveland Police family are feeling today. Our colleagues who should have been going home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts are not. And that is just unfathomable." She added that the federation would offer full support to the fallen officers' families and that their sacrifice would never be forgotten.
