A 'slang dictionary' has been provided to the jury in a Birmingham murder trial, where an 18-year-old is accused of killing a teenager amid a postcode gang war. The glossary includes more than 40 terms, ranging from innocuous phrases like 'yard' (meaning someone's home) to 'wet' and 'splash' (meaning to stab someone).
Details of the Case
The list was introduced as evidence during the trial of Oumar Traore at Birmingham Crown Court. It is alleged that on November 16 last year, when he was 17, he stabbed to death 19-year-old Yassin Alama on Hutton Road, Handsworth. The jury previously heard that Traore, nicknamed 'Omizz', was part of the 'B20' gang, named after the postcode territory in Handsworth. Mr Alama was associated with a rival gang in Aston.
Expert Testimony
PC Gareth Evans, who has worked in Birmingham gang intelligence since 2010, gave evidence on Tuesday. He took the jury through the 'slang dictionary', confirming interpretations of words that appeared in text and social media evidence. The jury was told that 'zk' means 'zombie knife', 'nizzy' means 'knife', and 'Mindi' (Somali) also means knife. 'Chete' is short for 'machete'. The court heard that 'jakes', 'flizz', and 'Feds' translate to 'police', while 'undies' refers to 'undercover police'. PC Evans stated that 'wet', 'splash', and 'yinged' describe stabbing, while 'slapping' refers to shooting. 'Packed', 'smoke', and 'duppy' mean to kill someone, and 'M' is short for 'Murder'.
