Smethwick Mosque Reopens After Tragic Murder of Teen Zeshan Afzal
A mosque in the Black Country has reopened to worshippers after a tragic incident that claimed the life of an 18-year-old man outside its premises. The Jamia Masjid, located off Oldbury Road in Smethwick, welcomed back the community following the fatal stabbing of Zeshan Afzal.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Zeshan Afzal was discovered with serious injuries after disorder erupted outside the mosque just before 9pm on Friday, February 20. West Midlands Ambulance Service responded swiftly, battling to save the young man from Smethwick, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Two other men, aged 19 and 22, sustained injuries during the incident, though fortunately, their wounds were not life-threatening. The scene was immediately cordoned off by West Midlands Police, who set up a blue tent in the car park as part of their investigation.
Community Response and Tributes
Worshippers who had just completed the Taraweeh evening prayer were instructed to remain inside the mosque initially. They were later allowed to leave but could not retrieve their vehicles from the cordoned area.
Today, the mosque reopened its doors, with a few bouquets of flowers attached to the railings in memory of Zeshan Afzal. The community has come together to mourn the loss of the young man, leaving heartfelt tributes at the site.
Police Investigation and Appeals
West Midlands Police have launched a thorough investigation into the murder. Detectives are urgently appealing to anyone with information to come forward without delay.
The police statement emphasized: "We remain keen to hear from anyone with information, or has mobile phone or dashcam footage, which could assist with our investigation. This can be sent directly to us via the Public Portal."
Authorities have clarified that while the disorder occurred outside a mosque, there is currently no evidence to suggest the incident was racially or religiously aggravated. They acknowledge the distress and concern within the community and have committed to maintaining a visible police presence in the area to provide reassurance.
