Smethwick Murder Investigation: Flowers Left Outside Mosque After Teenager's Death
A murder investigation is currently underway in Smethwick following the tragic death of an 18-year-old teenager over the weekend. Zeshan Afzal was discovered with serious stab injuries after disorder erupted in Oldbury Road on Friday night, February 20.
West Midlands Police were called to reports of disorder outside the Oldbury Jamia Masjid just before 9pm. Despite immediate medical attention, the young man was confirmed dead a short time later at the scene.

Detectives have sealed off the area for several hours as they launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing. Officers are actively reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and gathering information to establish exactly what transpired and identify those involved.
Although the incident occurred outside a mosque during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, authorities have stated there is currently nothing to suggest the attack was racially or religiously motivated. The investigation remains focused on determining the facts of the case.

In a moving display of community solidarity, several bouquets of flowers were attached to the railings outside Oldbury Jamia Masjid on Monday morning, February 23. This tribute comes as the local community grapples with the loss of a young life.
The incident also left two other men injured – aged 19 and 22 – who were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Their conditions are being monitored as the investigation progresses.
