Solihull Council has responded to allegations that newly installed traffic cameras are positioned incorrectly. The cameras, placed on May 1 outside the Saracens Head pub on Stratford Road in Shirley, are designed to deter drivers from making illegal U-turn manoeuvres at the junction with Richard Lewis Way.
Reform Councillors Raise Concerns
Councillors Prish Sharma and Sharon O'Connor, representing the Reform party, claimed in a Facebook video that the cameras were facing the wrong direction and pointing downwards. They stated that during their visit, they observed five motorists completing U-turns and have received complaints from residents that the issue persists.
Council's Response
Solihull Council dismissed the accusations, confirming that the cameras are operational and correctly aligned. A council spokesperson said: "Both cameras are facing the correct direction to capture any motorists completing the illegal U-turn manoeuvre at Richard Lewis Way. These cameras have been validated and are providing appropriate footage to capture contraventions."
Councillor's Statement
Councillor Sharma responded: "This is not about blaming anyone - this is about getting simple answers to straightforward questions. If the cameras are installed correctly and functioning properly, why are U-turns still happening 45 days later? If the cameras are doing their job, why is this still a safety issue? I have witnessed serious accidents on this road in April alone. The danger is real. Residents are at risk. My concern is simple: Are we using public money efficiently and effectively to solve problems? Or are we wasting money on solutions that don't produce results? This isn't the only example in our borough. There are many instances where the administration appears to prioritize announcements over actual outcomes. Residents deserve answers. Taxpayers deserve value for money. Our community deserves actual solutions - not just installations that look good on paper."
Background
The installation of the cameras aims to enhance road safety at a junction known for dangerous U-turns. The council maintains that the devices are functioning as intended, despite ongoing concerns from local representatives and residents.
