Police granted stop and search powers after Birmingham fireworks attacks
Special police powers in Birmingham after fireworks disorder

Special police powers have been authorised for Birmingham city centre overnight following disturbances involving fireworks being aimed at officers and members of the public.

What triggered the special powers?

The emergency measures come after a significant disorder on Wednesday, November 5, in areas including New Street, Dale End, and Staniforth Street. Police confirmed that groups launched fireworks in the street and from buildings, with some deliberately targeted towards police officers and police vehicles.

In response to these alarming incidents, 19 people have been charged with a range of offences, including assaulting police and public order violations.

What do Section 60 powers mean?

The Section 60 powers were enacted from 3pm on Friday, November 7, and will remain in force until 6am on Saturday, November 8. These powers provide officers with the authority to stop and search individuals without needing to have reasonable grounds for suspicion.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated the powers are a direct response to the dangerous misuse of fireworks. They emphasised that such behaviour is "not only dangerous, it's illegal" and can lead to fines, arrest, and criminal charges.

Police and community response

The police force has issued a strong statement, confirming they "won't tolerate such appalling behaviour which we know is frightening for people and puts them at risk of harm." They have assured the public that the safety of the community is paramount.

Authorities are working with local partners to address anti-social behaviour and are urging the public to report any incidents. For non-emergencies, people should call 101, while 999 should be used if there is an immediate danger or someone is at risk.
