Around 70 firefighters are battling a large grass fire in Stourbridge that has spread to six properties, leaving two people injured. The blaze broke out near a golf course at around 1.30pm on Thursday, 13 August 2026, and has engulfed an estimated 40 acres of land, including woodland.
The fire is one of several across the West Midlands, pushing the fire service to its limits, according to reports. Two casualties have suffered injuries from heat and smoke, and some local rail services have been stopped for safety reasons.
Eyewitnesses describe 'terrifying' scene
Eyewitness Adam Lewis said the fire had spread to several properties along Quarry Park Road, likening the scene to a "real life video game" and adding that the flames "jumped from house to house". Local resident Benjamin Jones described the situation as "terrifying", saying: "I mean I know it's warm out, but I didn't think it would be that bad. From where it started and where it is now it's a bit concerning. There is upwards of 40 fire trucks and emergency vehicles out there, it's wild."
Another witness, Hannah Burns, said: "There weren't any fire engines there when we were there, we only saw them heading there as we were leaving. I felt so sorry for the people in the houses, one man was loading his car with a suitcase. Others clearly didn't know what to do. We felt quite helpless."
Fire service response and impact
A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The fire is affecting a number of locations around Ounty John Lane, Racecourse Lane and Stourbridge Road. Two casualties have been affected by heat and smoke. We are increasing our resources at the scene. Some local rail services have been stopped for safety reasons. A number of properties in the surrounding area are understood to be experiencing power issues."
Another witness reported that Norton Road was blocked near The Crown at Iverley, with authorities not allowing anyone near the fire. The witness said: "We were trying to get down Norton Road and a man stopped us and said one of the fields is on fire. The smoke is just going everywhere. One of my friends said they saw ash in the air."
The fire has caused significant disruption, with road closures and power issues affecting the local community. Firefighters continue to work to bring the blaze under control, and residents are advised to avoid the area.
