A 14-year-old girl has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a stabbing at a school in Manchester. The incident at Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road, Blackley, on Tuesday, June 9, left two students and a teacher injured.
Court appearance
The teenager, who cannot be named due to her age, appeared via videolink at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday, June 12. She is charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of possessing a bladed article on school premises.
During the brief hearing, the girl only spoke to confirm her name, date of birth, and address. District Judge Briony Clarke transferred the case to the crown court and remanded the defendant in youth detention.
Injuries and investigation
Teacher Maysum Abdullah, 27, suffered a neck wound in the attack, according to reports. He and the two pupils, both 14, were later released from hospital. Greater Manchester Police confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening.
The alleged attack is being investigated by Counter Terrorism Police, but it has not been declared a terrorist incident, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Next steps
The teenager is due to appear at the Old Bailey on June 19. Judge Clarke told the defendant: "Because of the seriousness of the charges you face, I have to send this matter to the crown court."
