Teen jailed for knife attack in street fight

A teenager from Birmingham has been sent to a detention centre for attempting to 'neck shot' a rival during a knife fight, making a 'beheading motion' with a metre-long sword.

Details of the attack

Adam Ali, then aged 16, attacked Ibrahim Ishfaq on Belchers Lane, Bordesley Green, on May 17, 2024. The confrontation escalated into a physical fight, with both youths armed with knives. Ali swung the sword in a beheading motion, and Ishfaq raised his left arm to defend himself, receiving a stab wound to his hand. Both were injured in the incident.

Background and court proceedings

The attack occurred amid ongoing trouble between the two teenagers and their families. After his arrest, Ali told a youth offending worker of his 'desire to kill' Ishfaq and was recorded saying he wanted to 'neck shot' the victim.

Ali, now 18, of Plowden Road, Stechford, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possessing a knife in public. At Birmingham Crown Court on June 10, 2026, he was sentenced to a two-year detention and training order. District Judge Adrian Lower noted Ali's poor mental health at the time, which affected his judgment and subsequent comments.

Defense and sentencing

Joanna Staples, defending, argued that Ali's actions were partly due to 'bravado and a lack of maturity'. She highlighted that he had spent three months in custody on remand, where he took on roles as a mentor and listener, showing signs of maturation.

Judge Lower condemned knife crime as a 'serious evil', stating that young people often lack the self-control and awareness of risks that mature adults possess. He acknowledged the harm knives cause, including loss of life and serious injury.

Ishfaq admitted unlawful wounding on the basis of excessive self-defence and received a 12-month detention and training order.
