A Birmingham teenager with no previous convictions was caught carrying a zombie knife in a city street, a court heard. Haziq Kazmi, 18, of Warwick Road, was among three youths detained by police in Dolphin Lane, Acocks Green, on July 28.
When searched, Kazmi told officers he had a knife on his ankle in his sock. He pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, September 1. He now risks losing his liberty with a possible prison sentence after the discovery.
Police chase and search
Prosecuting, Ms Begum said: "On July 28, at approximately 7.30pm, officers arrived in Dolphin Lane. As soon as they arrived at the scene, a foot chase had taken place and three males were detained at the scene."
"When it came to the defendant's turn to be searched, he was asked if he had any weapons on him. He said he had a knife on his ankle in his sock. He was a man of good character with no previous convictions."
Defence requests pre-sentence report
His solicitor Mr Winstance asked the court to adjourn the sentence rather than "giving the full story." He said: "He is a young man of good character that's positive."
"The negative is a starting point of a prison sentence. I think you have to order a report before you can pass sentence that's what the rules say, when you have people at risk of losing liberty, then a pre sentence report is needed."
Next steps in court
Kazmi is due to be sentenced on November 10. The court will consider the pre-sentence report before deciding on the outcome, which could include a prison term.
