Prolific Thief Jailed After 16 Thefts in a Month and Attack on Security Guard
A prolific shop thief who targeted a West Midlands store 16 times in a single month before violently attacking a security guard has been sentenced to 36 weeks in prison. Mohammed Sufiyan Khan, aged 31, carried out a brazen 34-day crime spree, stealing approximately £3,000 worth of items from a business located on Freeth Street in Oldbury.
A Month-Long Crime Spree
Khan's criminal activities began on March 8, when he stole over £100 worth of alcohol from the Oldbury store. Over the following weeks, he repeatedly returned to the same location, amassing a significant haul of stolen goods. The spree culminated on Saturday, April 11, when Khan attempted another theft but was detained by a vigilant security guard.
During the confrontation, Khan assaulted the guard before the stolen items could be recovered. West Midlands Police officers swiftly attended the scene and arrested Khan. Upon search, they discovered a flick knife concealed in his waistband, leading to additional charges.
Charges and Court Appearance
Khan was charged with a total of 17 counts of shop theft, possession of a knife, and assault. It was revealed that his criminal behaviour extended beyond the Oldbury store; he also stole items from a supermarket on Wallows Lane in Walsall on January 4 and from another supermarket on Wednesbury Oak Road in Tipton on April 7.
Last week, Khan appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court, where he received a 36-week prison sentence. The court heard details of his repeated offences and the dangerous weapon found in his possession.
Police Statement on the Case
Sergeant Jason Walters, from the Sandwell South Retail Crime Team, commented on the case, stating, "Khan not only stole thousands of pounds of items from one specific store, but when he was arrested was also found to be in possession of a knife. Khan had complete disregard for the law and made the lives of the supermarket staff a misery. This behaviour will not be tolerated, and we will continue to prosecute offenders."
The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of retail crime and the importance of community safety measures in the West Midlands region.
