Police have arrested a third person in connection with the death of Jamie Evans, a 20-year-old man who was allegedly murdered in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The development comes as two men have been charged with murder and remanded into custody.
Fatal Incident Details
Mr Evans, from Stone, was found with fatal injuries inside a car on Friday, September 4. He was in a Ford which had collided with a stationary Audi at around 5pm. Police stated that Mr Evans had suffered a stab wound.
Emergency services attended the scene, but Mr Evans could not be saved. His death has prompted a major investigation by Staffordshire Police.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Corey Hughes, 20, and Connor Edward Cartlidge, 22, both of Newcastle-under-Lyme, appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Wednesday, September 9. They were charged on Monday evening, September 7.
Hughes has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. Cartlidge has been charged with murder. Both are next due to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on November 13, 2026.
Third Arrest
A 38-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in relation to the case. He has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue, police said.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "Two men have been remanded into custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of Jamie Evans in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
"Corey Hughes, 20, and Connor Edward Cartlidge, 22, both of Newcastle-under-Lyme, appeared at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court today after they were charged on Monday evening (7 September).
"Hughes has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place and Cartlidge has been charged with murder.
"Hughes and Cartlidge are next due to appear at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 13 November 2026.
"A 38-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, has now also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
"He has been released on conditional bail while our enquiries continue.

Family Tribute
Mr Evans' family previously issued a statement paying tribute to him. They said: "Jamie was so passionate about cricket and fitness, enjoying every opportunity to be active, challenge himself and spend time doing the things he loved.
"These passions reflected his determination, energy and zest for life.
"Although his life was far too short, the love he gave, the laughter he shared and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
"He will be deeply loved, profoundly missed and never forgotten.
"We’d like to thank the members of the public who so kindly went to Jamie’s aid and tried to help him."
Staffordshire Police continue to appeal for anyone with information to come forward as the investigation progresses. The 38-year-old man remains on conditional bail, and the two charged men await their next court appearance in November.
