Residents 'living in fear' as travellers return to Birmingham park
Travellers return to Birmingham park, residents 'living in fear'

Residents in the West Heath area of Birmingham say they are 'living in fear' after travellers moved back onto Parkdale Park, just off Longbridge Lane. Scores of caravans, motorhomes and vehicles were seen on the site, which is yards from Albert Bradbeer Primary School.

Previous incidents and resident concerns

Locals reported previous incidents of stone-throwing and alleged thefts during earlier encampments. The travellers had previously arrived at the beginning of May, putting residents 'on alert'. Some travellers were seen packing up and leaving on Tuesday, June 30.

Council response

Birmingham City Council said it is committed to protecting its land and will take steps to recover it from unauthorised encampments. A council statement noted: 'The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy.' Details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment, updated in 2019, are available on the council's website.

Context of larger encampment

This incident follows Birmingham's 'biggest ever' illegal traveller encampment, with around 70 caravans, motorhomes and vehicles at Barnes Hill in Bartley Green last month.
