Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested following a night of disorder in Birmingham city centre, with police moving quickly to quash online rumours that a stabbing had taken place. The incident unfolded on Sunday, August 9, in Stephenson Place, a busy thoroughfare adjacent to New Street and The Ramp, which leads to Grand Central and New Street Station, as well as the city's Apple store.

West Midlands Police were called to the scene at approximately 9.20pm after receiving reports of a large crowd gathering and causing disorder. Officers attended in significant numbers, with videos circulating on social media showing multiple police vehicles and officers responding to the disturbance. One clip captured a youth being pinned to the floor in New Street by several officers.
During the incident, one person was assaulted and subsequently taken to hospital for a check-up. Fortunately, their injuries were not believed to be serious. Police have confirmed that, despite widespread speculation online, no one was stabbed during the disorder.
Arrests and Charges
Both teenagers, aged 17, were arrested at the scene. The first was taken into custody on suspicion of failing to disperse from the area and a racially aggravated public order offence. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: "We’ve arrested two people following disorder in Birmingham city centre last night (9 Aug). We were called to Stephenson Place in Birmingham city centre at around 9.20pm to reports of a large crowd gathering and causing disorder."
The spokesperson added: "A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of failing to disperse the area and a racially aggravated public order offence. Another 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. Both teenagers remain in police custody. One person was taken to hospital to be checked over after being assaulted. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening or changing."
