West Midlands Police have made significant progress in the murder investigation following the fatal stabbing of 18-year-old Zeshan Afzal outside a Smethwick mosque. Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, were arrested from an address in Sandwell on the morning of Thursday, March 5, 2026.

Zeshan Afzal was discovered with serious stab wounds following reports of disorder in the area. Despite immediate medical attention, the 18-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later. The location of the attack, near a mosque in Smethwick, has heightened community concerns.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated: "We've today made further arrests as we continue to investigate the murder of Zeshan Afzal who was fatally stabbed in Smethwick. We detained two boys, aged 16 and 17, from an address in Sandwell this morning. They have been taken into custody for questioning on suspicion of murder."
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
To date, police have charged five teenagers in connection with Zeshan's death. However, authorities emphasize that the investigation remains very active. The police are continuing to pursue all leads and evidence to ensure justice is served.
The spokesperson added: "We've already charged five teens over the death of 18-year-old Zeshan, who was found seriously injured in Oldbury Road. It follows disorder at just before 9pm on 20 February. This remains a very active investigation but we still need to hear from anyone with information which could help us get justice for Zeshan and his family."
