An Aston Villa fan has alleged he was sexually assaulted during an FA Cup match at Villa Park following a dispute over standing. The incident occurred on Saturday, February 14, during the game against Newcastle United.
Dispute over standing
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was seated in the Holte End. He said he had to stand because the person next to him was blocking his view. After being asked by an elderly fan behind him to sit down, he requested the person next to him to sit, but they refused. A man then became abusive, swearing and using expletives.
The first supporter suggested a seat swap, which the victim agreed to. However, as he moved along the aisle, the abusive fan allegedly put his foot out to block him and continued with verbal abuse, saying, 'You don't know what I could do to you.'
Alleged assault
The victim then felt a sharp pain in his testicles. The attacker allegedly put his hand under the victim's coat and squeezed firmly for five to 10 seconds, causing extreme pain. The victim said the man was sneering and calling him names. The attacker then let go, but immediately grabbed his testicles again, this time fondling him.
Shocked, the victim moved to another seat and reported the incident to police at half-time. Officers said they would speak to the alleged attacker, but the victim did not hear back.
Police investigation
West Midlands Police investigated the report of sexual assault, including reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses. A force spokesman said: 'At this stage there isn't enough evidence to progress the investigation further, but we'll review any further information we receive.'
The victim is now appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. He said: 'I've been a regular at Villa Park for 35 years. My family have been going for over 100 years. Since the game, I have not been back and have no intention or inclination to return.'
Appeal for witnesses
Witnesses are urged to contact West Midlands Police via 101, Live Chat on the force's website, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting crime reference number 20/147858/26.
