WalkSafe founder fears for her children's safety in Birmingham

Emma Kay, 37, the founder of personal safety app WalkSafe, has expressed her ongoing fear for her own children's safety while leading a welfare service in Birmingham. As a mother of a daughter and a son, Kay shared how she regularly worries about their safety, both as a parent and as a woman in charge of the WalkSafe app.

The entrepreneur celebrated the launch of the free welfare app in Birmingham on April 24, 2026, with representatives from the NHS, Birmingham City Council, and West Midlands Police in attendance. The event featured a Justice Walk to raise awareness of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).

Speaking to BirminghamLive, Kay said: "As a mum of two, I've got a son and a daughter, I fear regularly for their safety. I actually see both sides of the coin. In my role, I see a lot of awful stories, I meet a lot of victims, I suppose daily I care about how those survivors operate in the world."

She noted that she also sees significant positive efforts from organizations like Birmingham City Council. "I also see a lot of good work. I see a lot of people like Birmingham City Council offering a lot of amazing advice, support and technology," she said. Kay concluded: "I think there's a lot more to do, but I always try to focus on what is being done and I love the work that is being done here today."

Justice Walk and App Launch

The WalkSafe app founder and Birmingham City Council's community safety team led a Justice Walk earlier today in support of National Stalking Awareness Month and to celebrate the app's launch in Birmingham. Attendees included Emma Kay, Waqar Ahmed (assistant director for community safety and resilience at Birmingham City Council), and Diane Rhoden (director of nursing for safeguarding at Birmingham and Solihull ICB). They highlighted efforts to tackle VAWG in the city.

WalkSafe is a personal safety app designed to help individuals stay connected and informed wherever they are in Birmingham. Birmingham is the third city to welcome the app, which is available for free on the App Store and Google Play. The app provides tools and real-time information to enhance journey safety.
