Detectives investigating the rape of a sex worker in Walsall have described the case as one of the most violent they have ever encountered, highlighting the victim's unwavering strength throughout the ordeal. Simon Tang, a 56-year-old businessman from Birmingham, was jailed for 12 and a half years at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, March 23, following a brutal attack near a car park on Birmingham Street in Walsall.

Details of the Violent Assault

The incident occurred on May 5 last year, when Tang repeatedly struck the woman with a baseball bat retrieved from the boot of his car, causing significant bruising to her head and legs. The attack, which took place in a West Midlands car park, was characterized by investigators as exceptionally brutal, with Tang later convicted of two counts of rape, possessing an offensive weapon, and actual bodily harm.

Victim's Courage and Legal Outcome

The victim, a sex worker, bravely came forward to report the abuse, leading to Tang's prosecution. In addition to his jail term, which includes an extended license period, Tang will be placed on the Sexual Offender Register for life. DS Morgan Colley, from the investigation team, commended the victim's resilience, stating that she demonstrated unwavering strength during the trial process, which was particularly challenging for her.

Detective's Statement on the Case

Speaking after the sentencing, DS Colley emphasized the seriousness with which such reports are treated, saying, "This is one of the most violent rapes I have ever seen in my time working in rape and serious sexual offences. The woman in this case has shown that we will take it seriously when abuse is reported to us, and we work tirelessly to get the best result. Her courage was clear, and her attacker is now serving a considerable time behind bars."
