A van driver from Walsall has been handed a six-month driving ban and three penalty points after being caught speeding on the M4. Eric Oppong, 50, was driving a white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at 57mph in a temporary 50mph zone, according to court documents.
Incident on the M4
The offence took place on September 6 last year on the M4 between junction 18 and junction 19 in Gloucestershire. A temporary speed restriction of 50mph was in force at the time, but Oppong was recorded travelling at 57mph.
The case was brought by Avon and Somerset Police and heard at Walsall Magistrates' Court on Monday, July 27. Oppong, of Jenner Road, Walsall, admitted exceeding the temporary speed limit in contravention of a local traffic order.
Court penalties
As well as the driving ban and points, Oppong was ordered to pay a £123 fine, £85 in costs, and a £49 victim surcharge, bringing the total to £257. According to Gov.uk, the vehicle involved was a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 315 Progressive CDI.
The ban means Oppong will be unable to drive for six months, a significant penalty for a professional or commercial driver. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which temporary speed restrictions are treated, particularly on motorways where roadworks and hazards are present.
