Police have launched an investigation into the unexplained death of a woman after her body was found in a public toilet near the historic Banbury Cross in Oxfordshire.
Discovery at Banbury Cross
Officers cordoned off the toilets on West Bar Street, close to the Banbury Cross, following the grim discovery at around 8:20 am on May 23. Thames Valley Police is now urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
In an official statement, the force said: 'At around 8:20 am this morning (23/5), we were made aware of an unexpected death in Banbury. Officers attended the public toilets on West Bar Street, close to the Banbury Cross, and sadly found the body of a woman.'
The statement added: 'We are still in the initial stages of this investigation, and the woman has not yet been identified. If anyone has any information regarding this unexplained death, please make contact with us on 101 quoting reference 43260255904.'
About Banbury Cross
The Banbury Cross is a 16-metre neo-Gothic monument famously associated with the nursery rhyme 'Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross.' The current cross was erected in 1859 to mark the wedding of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter.
Police are continuing their inquiries and ask anyone with information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
