Bomb disposal experts have been called to a Staffordshire quarry after an unexploded Second World War device was uncovered, causing significant disruption and road closures in the area.
Discovery and Initial Response
The munition was discovered at a quarry in Barton-under-Needwood on Tuesday (August 4). Staffordshire Police immediately cleared the Walton Lane location and established a 200-metre cordon to ensure public safety.
An extended 900-metre exclusion zone has now been implemented while explosives specialists work to make the device safe. The efforts have led to traffic building up on and around the A38, with a complete road closure between Kings Bromley and Barton-under-Needwood in place from 6.30pm.
Controlled Explosion Scheduled
A controlled detonation was scheduled to take place between 6pm and 8pm this evening (Thursday, August 6). Officers have urged members of the public to stay clear of the restricted zones during this operation.
A force representative stated: "We are continuing to work with specialist colleagues from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) at the site of a suspected unexploded WW2 bomb in the Barton-under-Needwood area."
Cordon and Evacuations
The quarry site on Walton Lane remains closed, with a 900-metre cordon expected to be in place between 6pm and 8pm. According to The Sentinel, a successful detonation may mean this cordon is released sooner.
A limited number of residential evacuations are underway, and residents are anticipated to return to their properties later tonight. Diversions have been put in place on the A38 to manage the traffic impact.
