Muslim worshippers were left horrified after discovering racist graffiti near Muslim graves at Streetly Cemetery in Walsall. The incident occurred on Friday, March 20, during Eid celebrations, when the cemetery was busy with visitors paying respects to loved ones.
Details of the Incident
An expletive followed by the word 'Islam' was daubed in white paint on the grass in front of gravestones at the cemetery, located on Little Hardwick Road on the borders of Walsall and Sutton Coldfield. The graffiti was reported and has since been removed, but images of the offensive message spread widely on social media, causing distress among the community.
Hasan Patel, 45, who visited the cemetery on Eid afternoon where eight of his relatives are buried, expressed his shock. "It's unbelievable. It's not just a graveyard, it's memories—as you walk from grave to grave, you picture the people. They deserve to rest in peace," he said. "There was a man there whose dad had passed away, and he was emotional. I went up to him and hugged him as I knew his dad. Everyday you just do not know what is going to happen."
Community and Official Response
A spokesperson for Walsall Community Independents confirmed awareness of the hateful graffiti and stated that senior council officers and cemetery staff had been contacted for immediate removal. The incident has been reported to West Midlands Police, who are expected to provide a statement shortly.
The spokesperson urged calm, saying, "We ask everyone to remain calm and report anything suspicious to the Police immediately." This incident highlights ongoing concerns about hate crimes and the need for vigilance in protecting community spaces.
