Mary Arden's Farm, the historic childhood home of Shakespeare's mother in Stratford-upon-Avon, is set to open its gates for a special one-day Community Open Day on Saturday, August 15. The farm, which has been closed to the public since August 2024 due to financial constraints and low visitor numbers, will welcome visitors for a day of Tudor-themed activities, rare-breed animals, and guided tours.
Historic farm opens for one day only
The farm, dating back to around 1514, was once a popular stop on the William Shakespeare trail. After its closure, it was repurposed as a learning centre for school groups, hosting more than 3,300 children annually from across the country. Now, in a move to reconnect with the local community, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is opening the site for a special event.
Supported by NFU Mutual, the open day offers a rare chance to explore the working farm and its rich history. Tickets are priced at just £5 for adults and £1 for children, making it an affordable family outing. With only 700 tickets available, early booking is strongly recommended to avoid disappointment. Tickets can be purchased via the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust website, and all proceeds go directly to the maintenance and care of Mary Arden's Farm.
What to expect on the day
Visitors can enjoy hands-on craft activities, meet rare-breed farm animals, take tours of Palmer's Farmhouse, and participate in Tudor games. Shakespeare's Kitchen will be on site offering hot and cold drinks, street food, and cakes for purchase.
A spokesman for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said: "Back by popular demand, our summer Community Days invite local families, community partners and visitors to discover the charm of Mary Arden’s Farm. This much-loved rural site is also home to our primary learning programme, making it the perfect setting for a day of discovery, play and hands-on history. Each Community Day will be packed with family-friendly activities, Tudor experiences and the chance to enjoy one of Stratford-upon-Avon’s most atmospheric historic sites."

Mary Arden's Farm is located at Station Road, Wilmcote, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 9UN. From Birmingham, it takes approximately 45 minutes to drive via the M42 and A3400, traffic permitting. However, visitors are advised to pre-book tickets and consider using public transport, as the car park is expected to be very busy. Wilmcote railway station is just a five-minute walk from the farm, with direct trains from Birmingham Moor Street taking approximately 47 minutes.
While in Stratford-upon-Avon, visitors can also explore other Shakespeare Birthplace Trust properties, such as Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, and New Place. These sites offer further insight into the life and times of the famous playwright.
