Residents across Leicestershire are being invited to explore local history while helping protect historic places of worship this autumn. The popular community fundraising event, Ride+Stride, gives people of all ages the chance to visit local churches and chapels to raise vital conservation funds.
Event Details and How to Take Part
Organised by the LeicesterShire Historic Churches Trust, the annual initiative encourages participants to travel between participating venues by walking, cycling, running, or using a mobility scooter. Walkers and cyclists can design their own custom route to visit a single nearby venue or spend the day touring multiple historic locations across the county.
Every participant collects sponsorship money, with half going directly to a church of their choice and the remaining half supporting wider county preservation grants. These grant funds help local places of worship pay for essential building repairs, urgent conservation work, and modern facility upgrades.
Nearly 300 Churches Already Signed Up
Nearly 300 historic churches and chapels have already signed up to open their doors to visitors taking part in the event. Places of worship can still register to welcome participants on the day by signing up through the official event website.
Janet Arthur MBE, chair of the LeicesterShire Historic Churches Trust, said: “Every church has a story to tell, and many rely on charitable support to help preserve these beautiful and historic buildings.” She continued: “Ride+Stride gives everyone the opportunity to make a real difference while enjoying a fantastic day out.”
Support and Registration
She added: “Whether you walk a few miles, cycle between several churches, welcome visitors at your local church or support someone taking part, every contribution helps protect Leicestershire’s remarkable heritage for future generations.” The organisers have also launched a redesigned website to make registering for the event and finding local routes easier for participants.
The Ride+Stride event takes place on September 12, 2026, and churches and chapels across Leicester and Leicestershire will be involved. The event is free to participate, with sponsorship raised supporting chosen churches.
