Tamworth's £21.6m Revamp Complete: New Gateway to Boost Town Centre
Tamworth completes £21.6m town centre regeneration

A major £21.65 million regeneration programme designed to breathe new life into Tamworth town centre and reverse a decline in visitors has been successfully completed by Tamworth Borough Council.

Seamless Links and Heritage Revealed

The project's core public realm works have finished, creating a seamless pedestrian link between the town's three key historic monuments: Tamworth Castle, the Town Hall, and St Editha's Church. This redesign aims to make the centre more accessible and easier to navigate for both residents and tourists.

A significant visual improvement comes from the Castle Gateway project, where a dated 1970s building was demolished. This has opened up clear views of the castle's ancient herringbone walls and created a much wider, more inviting entrance into the Castle Grounds.

New Hubs for Business and Community

Central to the regeneration is the launch of the Elizabeth Bradford Business Centre on Colehill. This carefully restored 19th-century building now houses 14 serviced offices, blending original architectural features with modern facilities to support local enterprise growth.

Meanwhile, a striking new building at Town Hall Place provides seven retail units tailored for independent small businesses. With affordable, flexible leases, the first wave of niche traders and startups is anticipated to open in the New Year.

Funding and Future Plans

The ambitious scheme was made possible by one of the largest Future High Streets Fund awards in the country. Combined with investment in the new South Staffordshire College facility, total investment in the town centre now exceeds £40 million.

While major works are done, the council's commitment continues. A sensitive restoration of three Grade II listed properties on Market Street is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. This paves the way for future regeneration plans in the Gungate area, ensuring heritage conservation remains a priority.
