A cherished piece of Woodhall Spa's village centre is to be carefully restored after the Parish Council successfully secured a grant for a major conservation project.
Securing the Future of a Heritage Feature
The Woodhall Spa Parish Council has been awarded funding through the East Lindsey District Council's Pride in Place grant scheme. This money will finance the Victorian Signage and Picket Fencing Restoration Project on The Broadway. The project aims to carry out a meticulous, like-for-like restoration of the iconic Victorian signage above the shops and replace the historic picket fencing that runs from Peter Scott Shoes to the Police Station.
These distinctive features, last refurbished back in 2007, sit within the Woodhall Spa Conservation Area and hold significant heritage value. The decision to act came after parishioners raised concerns, prompting a close inspection by the Parish Council in October. A working party was formed and they sought expert advice from Heritage Lincolnshire, which led to the funding opportunity.
A Project Driven by Community and Conservation
Support for the initiative was unanimous. The project will not only safeguard a vital part of Woodhall Spa's Victorian and railway heritage but also improve public safety and enhance the visual appeal of the village centre for everyone. The restoration will use the latest, long-life materials to ensure durability, backed by a planned ongoing inspection and maintenance regime.
Councillor David Charles highlighted the importance of the work, stating: "The Victorian signage is instantly recognisable and forms a key part of Woodhall Spa’s identity. Further investigation showed that parts of the structure were deteriorating to the point where they could become a safety concern, so securing this funding now is a really positive step."
Looking Ahead: Business as Usual
The Parish Council has expressed its gratitude to Heritage Lincolnshire for their support and guidance. Discussions are already underway with contractors and shop owners to manage the project details, ensuring minimal disruption. The goal is to maintain 'business as usual' for the Broadway shops throughout the restoration, with parishioners kept informed as the work progresses.
Once complete, the project will protect an important historical asset while revitalising the heart of the village for residents, businesses, and the many visitors it attracts.
