New £100 Cost of Living Payments Hit UK Bank Accounts from Today
£100 Cost of Living Payments Start for UK Households

Vital new financial support has started to reach the bank accounts of households across the UK, as the latest tranche of the government's cost of living help begins distribution. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is overseeing the rollout, which will see some families receive up to £350 in total support ahead of the challenging winter months.

Local Councils Deliver Targeted Support

The support is being distributed through the Household Support Fund (HSF), a £742 million pot of money allocated by the government to every local authority in England. Each council decides how best to distribute its share to low-income residents in its area, leading to a variety of schemes nationwide.

In a key development today, Monday 15 December 2025, eligible households in Doncaster, Yorkshire, can now apply for a £100 voucher specifically designed to help with soaring energy costs. To qualify, residents must live in the area and receive one of the following benefits: Housing Benefit, Local Council Tax Reduction, Universal Credit (including the housing element), or means-tested free school meals.

Payments and Vouchers Arrive for Winter

Meanwhile, in York, struggling households are due to receive a direct £100 payment to assist with increased living costs, covering essentials like food and utilities. For many, this latest payment comes on top of a £150 credit applied to council tax accounts during the summer. Combined, this means a total of up to £350 in extra support is being provided to individuals and families through these two council schemes alone.

The methods of distribution vary. Some local authorities are opting to issue supermarket or fuel vouchers, while others, like York, are making direct bank transfers. The Labour Party government has instructed councils that the fund should be used to provide "essential crisis support according to local need," alongside preventative measures like advice services.

Act Now as Funding Deadline Looms

There is a strict timeframe for this financial aid. All local authorities must ensure the HSF money is spent or committed by 31 March 2026, and it cannot be carried over. Councils are also encouraged to ensure any vouchers issued are used promptly.

This targeted support is a crucial lifeline for many as the country continues to grapple with high inflation and energy prices. Residents who believe they may be eligible are urged to contact their local council directly to inquire about the specific support available in their area.
