The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that all Universal Credit households will now qualify for the £150 Warm Home Discount, effective from November. This expansion follows a rule change by Labour, extending eligibility to approximately three million additional households, bringing the total to around six million.
Who Qualifies for the Warm Home Discount?
Previously, only certain benefit recipients were eligible. Now, everyone claiming Universal Credit qualifies, along with some of the poorest pensioners and those on Housing Benefit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). The discount is applied once during winter, typically between November and January, as either energy credit or a top-up voucher depending on payment method.
Impact of Rising Energy Bills
The move comes after energy bills rose by £221 per year on average in July, adding financial pressure on households. The expansion aims to support the most vulnerable during colder months.
Outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented in the House of Commons: "Because of our decisions, my decisions, the country is moving in the right direction in a stronger and a fairer Britain. Ending austerity, investing in our public services, the fastest falling NHS waiting lists for 17 years, more rights for workers, more rights for renters, standing with Ukraine, Britain's reputation restored and half a million children being lifted out of poverty."
