Birmingham suspects in court over Thai brothel charges

Suspects from Birmingham and the Black Country have appeared in court in connection with an alleged Thai brothel operation. A total of seven defendants faced Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday, May 21, where they spoke only to confirm their identities and enter not guilty pleas to a series of charges.

Defendants and Charges

The defendants and the charges they deny are as follows:

  • Jakkraphat Wannaphanom, 30, of Holiday Street, Birmingham: denied arranging or facilitating travel of Thai nationals with a view to exploitation; controlling prostitution for gain; keeping a brothel.
  • Punyisa Wannaphanom, 50, of Holiday Street, Birmingham: denied arranging or facilitating travel of Thai nationals with a view to exploitation; controlling prostitution for gain; keeping a brothel; and transferring criminal property (cash).
  • Wypaporn Haddon, 49, of Griffiths Drive, Wolverhampton: denied controlling prostitution for gain and transferring criminal property (cash).
  • Stuart Haddon, 53, of Marlow Drive, Wolverhampton: denied transferring criminal property (cash).
  • Gareth Morgan, 38, of Park Hill, Birmingham: denied arranging or facilitating travel of Thai nationals with a view to exploitation; controlling prostitution for gain; keeping a brothel; and transferring criminal property (cash).
  • Kittima Raweewan, 34, of Gravel Lane, Salford: denied arranging or facilitating travel of Thai nationals with a view to exploitation; controlling prostitution for gain; keeping a brothel; and transferring criminal property (cash).
  • Jolie Cooper, 49, of Aldrich Avenue, Coventry: denied arranging or facilitating travel of Thai nationals with a view to exploitation; controlling prostitution for gain; keeping a brothel; and transferring criminal property (cash).

Timeline and Trial Date

All alleged offences are said to have taken place between January 7, 2023, and June 25, 2024. The court heard that a trial, expected to last up to six weeks, has been set for November 5, 2029. Judge Michael Chambers KC explained that this was currently the earliest date available due to the high volume of cases, but the court would look to bring it forward if possible.

Bail and Next Steps

All defendants, some of whom were assisted by a Thai interpreter, were released on bail. Judge Chambers told them: "Your case is adjourned for trial, currently listed on November 5, 2029. It's important you keep in touch with your solicitors because we will try to bring the date forward."
