Children's Home Plan Divides Solihull Residents

A proposal to convert a family home on Radbourne Road in Shirley, Solihull, into a care home for three children has sparked mixed reactions among locals. While some residents see the potential care home as a valuable community asset, others have raised concerns about increased traffic and a lack of information about the care provider.

The plan was submitted to Solihull Council in April. One resident highlighted existing traffic issues, stating, "When we get the school parking it becomes almost impassable twice a day for at least half an hour." However, a woman who has lived on the street for two decades said, "If it's only a small children's home that's fine." Another resident noted, "Children's homes are an asset to the community."

Concerns were raised about the unknown provider, as no name was included in the planning application. Liberal Democrat councillor Laura McCarthy has brought forward a motion addressing "the safeguarding risk of the unknown" regarding speculative conversions by entities without registered provider status. Councillors have agreed to send the motion to future board meetings for further scrutiny.

Despite these concerns, the majority of residents indicated they would be happy with the conversion if the home is well-run.
