Lee Bowden, a 27-year-old father from Wolverhampton, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Ridgacre Road, Quinton, shortly after midnight on Saturday, March 21. An inquest has determined that he was driving while intoxicated and at excessive speed.
The grey Mercedes he was driving struck the central reservation kerb before skidding sideways into a tree. His girlfriend was a passenger in the vehicle at the time but survived the crash. West Midlands Police confirmed that Mr Bowden was 'intoxicated and speeding' at the time of the collision.
Inquest Findings
Assistant Coroner Ian Dreelan stated: 'An investigation by WMP found the cause of the collision was driving at speed whilst intoxicated.' Mr Bowden was pronounced dead at the scene at 1.02am. The inquest concluded that his death was due to a road traffic collision caused by his own actions.
Family Tribute
Mr Bowden's family paid an emotional tribute, describing him as 'a loving father, son, brother and partner.' He left behind two young daughters and a wide circle of friends who considered him a true friend. His family added that he had recently secured a promotion as a regional coordinator for the AA, had got his own flat, and 'his future was looking bright.'
The crash occurred after a night out with friends. The inquest heard that Mr Bowden had been drinking before getting behind the wheel. His death has left a devastated family and community.
