Emergency Financial Support Launched for Benefit Claimants in London

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced it is funding emergency support payments for individuals receiving Housing Benefit, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), or Carer's Allowance in the City of London. This initiative, part of the broader Household Support Fund, aims to assist those facing immediate crises, emergencies, or disasters who are unable to afford essential items.

Eligibility Criteria for the Emergency Support Scheme

To qualify for this assistance, applicants must meet specific requirements. They must be experiencing a crisis or emergency, be resettling into the community after institutional or residential care, or need support to avoid entering such care. Additionally, eligible individuals include families under exceptional pressure or those setting up a home as part of planned resettlement.

Applicants must be 16 years of age or older and reside in the City of London. They should be living in temporary accommodation provided by the City of London Corporation and have been offered permanent accommodation in a City Corporation property. However, those recently placed in temporary accommodation or moving between different temporary properties are not eligible and are advised to contact their Housing Officer or Key Worker for guidance.

Financial and Income Requirements

Financial thresholds are also in place. Applicants must not have savings exceeding £6,000 and must have an annual income of less than £30,000. Alternatively, they must be in receipt of Carer's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA - contributory), or Housing Benefit to qualify.

Types of Support Available

Depending on the reason for applying, the Emergency Support Scheme can provide payments for various essentials. This includes food, fuel, clothing, furniture, white goods, emergency travel, and other household items. The support is tailored to address immediate needs during difficult times.

Application Process and Decision Timeline

The City of London Corporation will review applications based on eligibility and the reasons provided. A decision letter will be sent via email or post, detailing the award and next steps. The council aims to process applications within 24 hours for crisis support and 72 hours for community support, ensuring timely assistance for those in need.

This emergency funding underscores the DWP's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during unforeseen hardships, providing a crucial safety net for benefit claimants in London.
