Kingstanding Mecca Bingo has closed its doors after 64 years, leaving players devastated and the community fearing for the future. The iconic bingo hall, housed in a Grade II listed former Odeon cinema building dating back to 1935, shut down on Sunday, June 7, after welcoming players since 1962.
Financial Losses and Building Repairs
Owner Rank Group cited financial losses and the need for "considerable" repairs as the reasons for the closure. The building, a landmark at Kingstanding Circle, requires significant investment to maintain its historic structure.
Heartbroken Players
Long-term players expressed devastation at losing what they described as a vital community hub. One regular, aged 68, who had been visiting since he was 16, said: "I'm gutted. We have so many friends here. It's a very happy place." Another patron highlighted transport concerns, explaining that alternative venues in Wednesbury or Oldbury were inaccessible without a car. A third player noted the strong community bonds formed at the hall over decades.
Broader Pattern of Closures
The closure reflects a broader pattern of facility closures in Kingstanding, including the police station in 2019 and the longstanding Blunts shoe shop this month. Residents feel their area is being left behind whilst other parts of Birmingham thrive. Rank Group now operates just one Mecca hall in Birmingham, located in Acocks Green.
Community Fears for the Future
The loss of the bingo hall has left many questioning what will become of the area. The Grade II listed building now stands unused, and residents worry that the community is being abandoned. The closure marks the end of an era for Kingstanding, where the bingo hall served as a social hub for generations.
