Lloyds Bank is set to close its Willenhall branch on November 5, 2026, marking the end of the town's last remaining bank. The decision has sparked serious concerns about the future vitality of the town centre, according to ward councillor Simran Cheema.
Last Bank in Town
The closure follows the shutdown of HSBC in 2017 and Barclays in 2018, both of which have remained vacant ever since. With Lloyds' departure, Willenhall will have no bank branches left, leaving residents and businesses without local banking facilities.
Councillor Cheema expressed disappointment, stating: "The closure of Lloyds Bank in Willenhall is extremely disappointing and represents yet another setback for our town centre and local community."
Digital Alternatives Not Enough
Cheema emphasized that digital alternatives cannot replace face-to-face services, particularly for vulnerable groups. "For many residents, particularly older people, those with disabilities, and those who are less confident using online banking services, the branch provides an essential face-to-face service that cannot be replaced by digital alternatives," she said.
She added: "This decision also raises serious concerns about the future vitality of Willenhall town centre. Lloyds Bank is the last remaining bank in the town centre, and its loss will leave residents and businesses without access to a local banking facility."
Lloyds' Response
A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group defended the closure, noting that the majority of customers now use online banking. "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the nearby Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before," they said.
Lloyds branches in Bilston town centre, Walsall, and Wolverhampton remain open as alternatives for Willenhall residents.
Call for Reconsideration
Councillor Cheema has written to Lloyds Bank urging them to reconsider their decision. The closure is scheduled for November 5, 2026, leaving the town without any banking services for the foreseeable future.
