A man has been charged with being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog after a 78-year-old woman died in Wolverhampton. Lila Hall, also known as Carol, was attacked by a dog at a house on Willis Pearson Avenue on Wednesday, April 15. Emergency services attended the scene but the pensioner was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival.
Court Appearance and Charges
Matthew Williams, 37, of Wolverhampton, has been charged with one count of being the owner or person in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog, causing injury resulting in death. He appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on July 7 and was remanded in custody until a second hearing scheduled for August 4.
Police Investigation and Appeal
Detectives from West Midlands Police have been investigating the incident since April. Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell said: “We have spoken to a number of witnesses as part of our investigation but we are still keen to hear from others who may have information. I would encourage anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to us to get in touch.”
A police spokesperson added: “Matthew Williams was arrested following the incident on April 15 when 78-year-old Lila Hall was attacked by a dog on Willis Pearson Avenue. He has since been charged with one count of being the owner/person in charge of a dog dangerously out-of-control, causing injury resulting in the death of a person.”

The fatal attack has shocked the local community. Neighbours described Lila as a quiet and friendly woman who kept to herself. The incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter enforcement of dog ownership laws and better public awareness of dangerous dog behaviour. West Midlands Police have not disclosed the breed of the dog involved.
