Octopus Energy Expands 'Zero Bills' Homes to Wixams and Tewkesbury
Octopus Energy expands 'Zero Bills' tariff homes

In a major move for sustainable living, Octopus Energy has announced a significant expansion of its pioneering 'Zero Bills' tariff, partnering with property developer Barratt Redrow to build dozens of homes where residents will pay nothing for their energy for ten years.

New Developments in Bedfordshire and Gloucestershire

The collaboration will see 54 'Zero Bills' homes constructed across two new sites. The developments are located in Wixams, Bedfordshire, and Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2026, with both companies already considering further phases based on the success of this initial rollout.

This initiative builds on previous research trials and represents a scalable model for integrating zero-energy-cost living into new housing developments from the ground up.

How the 'Zero Bills' Model Works

The scheme combines highly energy-efficient housebuilding with smart technology. The new homes will be equipped with solar panels, heat pumps, and electric vehicle (EV) chargers as standard. Octopus Energy's innovative tariff then manages the energy generated and consumed, ensuring that the cost to the homeowner is completely eliminated.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, stated: "We are now able to showcase what can be achieved with Zero Bills at scale in new housing developments. With new homes already being built with solar panels, heat pumps and EV chargers, eliminating home energy bills with our game-changing tariff is now a simple, viable and cost-effective upgrade."

A Partnership for Sustainable and Affordable Living

Oliver Novakovic, technical and innovation director at Barratt Redrow, emphasised the long-term benefits for buyers. "By combining Barratt Redrow’s highly energy-efficient homes with Octopus’ Zero Bills technology, we’re helping buyers to cut their energy costs to zero whilst also lowering their carbon footprint," he said.

He added that the partnership highlights how innovation in construction and energy can collaborate to create homes that are both more sustainable and more financially affordable over the long term.

In a separate but related support measure, Octopus Energy is also offering free electric blankets to customers with medical vulnerabilities through its Assist Fund. The company estimates that using an electric blanket could save the average household around £300 per year on heating costs.
