Pension Credit: Claim £48 extra a week with Carer's Allowance rule
Pension Credit: £48 extra a week with Carer's Allowance rule

State pensioners on Pension Credit can boost their income by £48.15 a week if they receive Carer's Allowance, Carer Support Payment, or have claimed Carer's Allowance but aren't receiving it because another benefit pays more. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) includes this as an extra amount on top of the standard Pension Credit top-up.

Pension Credit raises weekly income to £238 for single claimants and £363.25 for couples with joint income. These figures form the baseline, but additional payments are available for those with extra responsibilities, such as caring duties or dependent children.

Who qualifies for the £48.15 carer addition

The £48.15 weekly extra applies if you get Carer's Allowance, receive Carer Support Payment, or have claimed Carer's Allowance but are not being paid it because you already receive another benefit that is higher. Both you and your partner can claim this addition if each of you has claimed or is getting Carer's Allowance.

This provision recognises the financial impact of unpaid caring roles. It is separate from the standard Pension Credit rate and does not require a separate application if you already receive the qualifying benefits.

Extra payments for dependent children

Pension Credit also provides additional amounts for each child or young person you are responsible for who lives with you. The rate is £69.98 per week per child. This rises to £81.07 per week for the first child if they were born before 6 April 2017.

These amounts continue until 31 August after the child's 16th birthday, or after their 19th birthday if they are in approved education or training. Eligible courses include GCSEs, A levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, and SVQs or NVQs up to level 3. The education must involve more than 12 hours per week on average.

Disability additions for children and young people

If the child or young person is disabled, you may receive an extra £37.93 per week if they get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children at the lowest or middle rate of the care component, or any rate of the mobility component. The same applies for Child Disability Payment, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) at the standard rate of the daily living component or any rate of the mobility component, and Adult Disability Payment at the standard daily living rate or any mobility rate.

A higher addition of £118.46 per week applies if the child or young person receives the highest rate of the care component of DLA or Child Disability Payment, the highest rate of Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance, the enhanced rate of the daily living component of PIP, or the enhanced rate of Adult Disability Payment. You might also qualify if the child is blind or severely sight impaired.

These disability additions are paid on top of the standard child amounts, meaning a family with a severely disabled child could receive more than £200 per week in extra Pension Credit. Claimants should ensure they report all qualifying benefits to the DWP to receive the correct entitlement.
